Sabbatical

I have gone on two consecutive months of working without a whole day rest just so I could lay aside more moolah. I have been preparing for the rainy days up ahead – my dad’s gonna be laid off next month which adds up to the pressure to earn, not to mention finish my thesis while doing so. Though my dad has already prepared a back-up plan and even if we did not sit down and talk about if  I should extend more financial aid for the family, I have put it upon myself that I gotta learn how to provide. Hence, I toiled endless nights in my OL teaching job even on the weekends.

It took a toll on me. I had a fever for a week but even then I continued with my lessons, cancelled  as much lesson slots I could without penalty, and just left my thesis work altogether. Just then, I was reminded of this verse:

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world yet forfeits his soul?- Mark 8:36 (NIV)

I think God was reminding me to again observe the discipline of having regular Sabbaths. When you think of it, it’s the easiest commandment to follow since God simply longs for His people to take  a rest, even just for one day in a week. Even He, rested on the 7th day of creation despite the fact that He did not need to. So I decided to take a rest today and hopefully this will start off a regular Sabbath, besides I felt like my life was about to become solely about making money and making ends meet. I have to fight staleness. So my planner entry for August 7, 2011 was: I’m gonna have a full Sabbath this Sunday and nobody’s gonna tell me otherwise.

Here are the things I did for today:

• Sunday service at 11am
• Walked from GT Toyota to Philcoa with Nica just because it was UPCAT and it was almost impossible to leave UP on a jeep
• Shopped blouses
• Cleaned the house a bit
• went to sleep again for 4 hours
• Watched recaps of American Best Dance Crew Season 6 (Yes, I do like watching people dance despite being a bad dancer myself)
• Watched clips of Step Up 3D. (I was supposed to watch the whole movie but I had a very crappy copy. Fell in love with Adam Sevani’s swag for the nth time)
• read articles I have been meaning to read for pleasure
• Watched Wong Fu one day Hong Kong shorts.
• day’s highlight: talked to God

I know observing a weekly Sabbath will lessen my supposed income but I sincerely believe that my God is a God who provides. He is my Jehovah Jireh. That is why I have stopped worrying about the issue of my dad being laid off. Our family have faced far worse than this and God saw us through every single time.

I could really use a day a week for some introspection. I could also push some dates with people who truly care for me, I have been pretty lonely these past few weeks.
